Do I need to make any adjustments to my Transcend if I travel or fly at high altitudes? No. Transcend automatically compensates therapy pressure to altitudes of up to 8,000 feet.
What if I need to change the therapy pressure on my Transcend? Your clinician or durable medical equipment (DME) dealer will set therapy pressure for you. If you need to change your therapy pressure setting after you have received your Transcend, you must contact your dealer and have them make the appropriate adjustments for you.
Does Transcend have a humidifier? Transcend uses patent pending heat moisture exchange (HME) technology to humidify the air during therapy. HME technology has been used for many years in hospitals for patient ventilation, but Transcend is the first sleep therapy device capable of using this method of humidification. During therapy, a small and hygienic HME captures heat and moisture from your exhaled breath to provide warm, moist air when you inhale. This eliminates the need for a traditional heated humidifier and all the problems that comes with it.
How long does a heat moisture exchanger (HME) last? Different people require different levels of humidification. The HME should be replaced once you feel you are no longer receiving adequate humidification. Generally, this will be about once a week. Your Transcend system comes with four HMEs. Replacements can be ordered from us.
Are HMEs reimbursable by insurance? At this time, the HME is not reimbursable by insurance.
How do I travel with Transcend? Carry your Transcend with you on your flight. As a medical device, it will not count as one of your carry-on items. Never check a sleep apnea therapy device with your baggage as it can be damaged through normal luggage handling procedures. Your doctor can provide you with a letter stating your diagnosis and the need to carry your device with you, if necessary: Be sure to call the airline in advance to clarify procedures and in-flight policies.
Can I use Transcend on the airplane? Transcend is FAA compliant and meets electromagnetic compatibility requirements for use on board an aircraft. Transcend users are advised to have a copy of the letter of FAA compliance from Somnetics International Inc. as well as a letter from their doctor certifying the need for positive air pressure treatment. It is also a good idea to check with the airline's medical services in advance to clarify procedures and in-flight policies.
Will wearing Transcend be uncomfortable? Wearing something on your head when you go to bed may take a night or two to get used to. Sleep therapy patients who have tried Transcend tell us that once you lay your head on the pillow you will hardly notice that Transcend is there. It is designed to move slightly on your head so you can move and turn in bed without breaking the mask seal.
