Saturday, October 03, 2009 Healthcare reform and its' impact on the bariatric community: Many of you in the healthcare industry have questions about how the healthcare debate in the US is going to affect our bariatric field. I have been advocating for the rights of the obese population in the US for many years and are closely following and participating in the current healthcare reform debate. Some one that I know travels to Washington D.C. frequently to lobby, to attend hearings and to testify on behalf of the obese population and their special medical/surgical/rehab needs. I was happy to hear him say that the government seems to be more aware today of the obesity epidemic, the cost this epidemic is having on patient’s lives and our society and that discussions around caring for this population is central to the healthcare debate. This bodes well for those of us in the bariatric community if indeed a final healthcare bill provides care to those suffering from obesity and obesity related diseases, but we need to be heard, so I’m asking all of you to write your local, state and national representatives and ask them to fight for the needs of the morbidly obese patients. Secondly contact the OAC www.obesityaction.org and learn more about this advocacy group, what they are doing for our patients and industry and how you can help. I recommend you join the OAC and while you’re on their web page check out their video and the legislative action center where you can learn more about local, state and national issues that impact our industry and our patients.
